Levanto
The Five Lands end with Punta Mesco but it is easy to find places, like Levanto, that are simply wonderful. The little town has ancient origins. We can certainly say, from the iron age « cassette tombs », that the Liguri were the first to inhabit these lands. After them, came the Romans that believed this land very important commercially. Aterwards, came the Byzantines and a brief Malaspina administration that lasted 100 years. Finally, in 1211, Levanto became spontanously part of the Genoa Republic and has always been considered a free munucipality. In 1265, while the mayor stayed at the S. Siro little village, « the loggia » was built. There have been brief and tumultuous governments that came one after the other, like Castruccio Castracani in the 1300, Roberto of Naples till the Napoleonic domination and before the Italian Reign was created. Some evidences arrived to us. The Malaspina Castle is a perfect exemplum of that, it has been restructured by the people of Genoa; or the walls from which we can still admire the clock tower. Today, Levanto is an important tourist place in the Est coast, thanks to the creation of modern structures that didn’t disfigure the splendid landscapes still admirable.
